Planning ApprovedThe narrow and irregularly shaped plot, combined with the the client preference to place living areas at first floor, called for a special resolution of the plan. The design flips these challenges into opportunities, resulting in a layout that naturally follows the shape for the plot, maximising its potential for open views from the elevated living areas. At the core of the design lies the desire for natural daylight throughout, the utmost luxury. The two volumes of the house start together at street front, then diverge as they follow the plot. A small open atrium occurs, offering ample daylight to all rooms around it. The upper level is envisaged as a hybrid of summer &amp; winter living, with the open areas blending seamlessly into the main rooms. The colour palette is muted, taking inspiration from the olive grove surrounding the house. Lime render from local agregates grounds the house in its surroundings, while the roof is comprised of subtle olive green zinc panels. <img width="1079" height="967" width_o="1079" height_o="967" Patras. Greece Area. 54,000m2National Competition. 5th Prize The E.G.Ladopoulos Paper Mill (EGL) holds a strategic position within the urban fabric of Patras. Having once been the largest paper-producing factory in the country, the complex is currently abandoned, with most buildings being derelict and empty. The coexistence of humans and machines was the driving force of EGL - this can be restored with the right uses. The central vision of the regeneration is to mend the broken factory links, enabling its transition into the 21st century. The vision is bi-fold: - Understanding the factory’s original cycle and mending the broken ‘line of production’. - Reversing the focus, not revolving around the machines any more but around the people. EGL is formed into five new neighbourhoods. Each increases human interactions, provides ample public space and renders the factory into a recognizable beacon of local and supra-local value.&nbsp; Most buildings are maintained, with building fabric carefully removed in key locations to allow for increased permeability.&nbsp; By making visible what has remained invisible, the heart of the neighbourhood is once again beating. White is chosen as the colour of the interior interventions, reminiscent of sheets of paper. London. United Kingdom Competition. 1st Prize The House of Cards is a cafe rooted within the community of Crydon, London. It is thin, transparent and inviting. The structural elements all bear different colour treatment and hold the roof together. The colours are inspired from Croydon’s street art and its diverse local community. Two levels have different goals: the cafe is the centre of activity whereas the terrace is a beacon, a belvedere attracting attention to what is happening below. As the years pass, the cards are shuffled. The cafe grows with the residents. Always changing and always versatile, it is the centre of their collective memories. Giorgos Sideris Renovating in the centre of Athens is always an opportunity to reveal the rich history of buildings.&nbsp; Such is the case of these two small flats, nested in a quiet street in Plaka. The old smaller rooms are demolished in favour of an open plan layout. The traces of the old walls are preserved and meticulously filled with marble slats. A custom, modern terrazzo is inspired by the antique one. Reject marble pieces were used for the new terrazzo, giving new life to material that would have been wasted. Athens. Greece Area. 80m2 Status. Under Construction Set in a quiet, pine-lined street in the suburb of Marousi, the apartment faces south and receives ample daylight. This, however, was not reflected in the deep living area, open to the balcony only on one side. A meticulous approach to the constraints of the existing plan was adopted. Constraints were identified and addressed one by one, turned instead into opportunities towards a flexible plan, better adapted to everyday use. The adopted design moves are not concealed but rather celebrated, both in colour and volumetric approach. Free, lego-like, furniture volumes define a new hallway and kitchen space, not touching the ceilings. Syros. Greece . BlocK722architects+ Position . Project Architect Photography. Anna Perela Both residences are situated in the island of Syros. The main intention of Syros I was to unify the various spaces of the house under one roof facing the Aegean, whereas the approach at Syros II was to create multiple volumes clustered together. In both cases, the entrance is situated in the back, following a gentle descent through continuous miniature courtyards, planted with local aromatic herbs. The landscape and sea are gradually revealed.
