Competition. 1st Prize
The House of Cards is a cafe rooted within the community of Crydon, London. It is thin, transparent and inviting. The structural elements all bear different colour treatment and hold the roof together. The colours are inspired from Croydon’s street art and its diverse local community.
Two levels have different goals: the cafe is the centre of activity whereas the terrace is a beacon, a belvedere attracting attention to what is happening below.
As the years pass, the cards are shuffled. The cafe grows with the residents. Always changing and always versatile, it is the centre of their collective memories.
Competition 1st prize, as published in the Architects Journal, the UK's leading professional architecture magazine.
